Did you have a method of naming your child or children? Some name their child after a family member, friend, or celebrity. Others look through baby name books and make a short list of names, to finally agree on the perfect one. Giving your child a name is a big decision, as this will be how people identify them for the rest of their lives.
Giving your blog a name is important too. It will identify you from all other blogs and businesses. In the past (before the internet), a name was considered by where it would be placed in the Yellow Pages phone book. If you had a plumbing business, you would want your name to be “Affordable Plumbing” as it would be placed in the Plumbing section starting with letter A’s. before all the other names. Thankfully, today you can choose a name that best fits you.
Before hastily settling on a name, make sure you follow these steps.
1) Create a “Why”, “What” “Who” Word Wall
Take out a piece of paper. Make three columns with Why, What, Who at the top.
As an example, I am going to use the idea of creating a blog about moms having a healthy pregnancy.
First column, write words that explain the “Why” you have a blog. Example: 1) Because a moms health is important to a developing fetus. 2) Because you want moms to know the latest health trends to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. 3) Because moms need the latest products for a healthy pregnancy.
Second column, write words that explain the “What” your blog will provide the reader/consumer. Example: fitness, recipes, relaxation, encouragement, mom support, your story about your pregnancy, stages of pregnancy, vitamins, essential oils, yoga, clothing, doula, midwife, etc.
Third column, write words that describe “Who” you want to love your blog. Example: first time moms, moms who have health issues, moms who had a cesarean or pregnancy complications, doulas, midwives, physicians, health coaches, fitness instructors, etc.
With this word wall, you begin to get a good look at what your blog will provide to your reader or customers. Sometimes it is hard to see the big picture when you have a rough idea at the beginning. Imagine if a new mom connects with this pregnancy blog and changes her lifestyle, which helps her give birth to a healthy baby. That’s the power and influence of mom blogs today.
You can also use word generators. The ones I like are Pickydomains.com, Wordoid.com, NameMesh.com, Panabee.com or use a Thesaurus to find words that are common.
2) Blend some words together that you like.
For example, here are some popular mom blogs that currently focus on pregnancy.
Do these blogs convey a message about having a healthy pregnancy?
3) Create five blog names you like:
Examples I would think of:
1) FitMomToBe 2)HealthyMom2B 3)HealthyBabyYoga 4) FitBabyMomma 5) MomtoBeFitClub
4) Eliminate any Names that have These Proven Mistakes
- Name includes a location (this can be limiting for a growing blog).
Example: Kentucky Fried Chicken eventually changed their brand name to KFC.
- Name you have to explain.
Example: Badago’s (although cute for a restaurant name, yet not for a blog)
- Name is hard to spell the way it sounds.
Example: BabeeBodee.com – although cute in print, a newcomer would type babybody.com and never find your blog.
- Name is not URL Available. If your idea for a .com name is already taken, you should not use that name, even if available as a .info, .org, .us, .biz, .net etc. Yet, if the name is available, you may want to buy the extra extensions so no one else takes them. Go to www.GoDaddy.com to see if name is available.
5 . Name has Special Characters. Adding symbols or special characters are hard for people to remember. Try to avoid using these when creating your name.
- Name has dates. Example: HealthyBabyMomma2018
Putting dates limits your future. The only reason you would put a date is if your blog is based on a specific date happening, like a wedding, celebration etc.
- Name is competing. Do not try to be cute with naming your blog with a well-known brand or tagline. You actually might get into some legal trouble.
- Name is just about you. You want the name of your blog to be about your reader and what they are looking for. Unless you are a celebrity, brand, service, or just want a blog to focus on you or your family, I would stay away from your name.
Example: MomFitnessWithNancy This is great if it will just be Nancy offering fitness advice. Yet, it would not be a good name if Nancy intends to bring in other writers, sponsored posts, add a partner or someday want to sell her blog.
- Name is hard to spell.
Some names are more difficult than others to spell. For example, mompreneur, entrepreneur, introspective, international, differentiated, etc. These words are too long and easy to misspell.
- Siri or Alexa won’t understand.
With new voice technology, you need a name that will easily be detected. Practice saying your blog name in a voice control and see if it easily is translated correctly.
- Name is too Long. Attorney offices are known for this (Law offices of Stedman, Hybel, Williams and Long). Try to shorten the name as best you can. Ask yourself if it’s too long to write or say, or even explain. You can use abbreviations if they are easy to understand (example: MomTravelco.com)
- Name is to Narrow. If you plan to do more with your blog than your current focus, you need to make sure it isn’t too limiting. A blog like SummerBarbecueMom, is a perfect niche if you only intend to barbecuing in the summer. You may want to branch out and take out the summer so all seasons of barbecuing can be represented.
Now that you will avoid these common name mistakes, you are ready to get creative with a name you will love.
5) Birth Your Blog Name Check-List
Make a check mark if the answer is “yes” to the following questions.

|Is it non-competitive to others in same niche?|
|Does name offer a solution or offer advice?|
|Does your name tell what the blog is about?|
|Is your name easy to remember?|
|Is name broad enough to build on?|
|Is it easy to pronounce?|
|Does name go with a catchy tagline?|
|Is name the favorite of the others?|
|Will name attract your target market?|
|Does name bring a feeling you want to project?|
|Does name relate to who you are?|
|Is name your best friends favorite?|
|Would a friend find it easy to share with others?|
Now count which of the five names received the most “yes” checkmarks. This could very well be your blog name.
Wait a few days before buying the URL. I buy all most of my URL’s (domain name) with GoDaddy, unless I am going to buy a name and have it hosted the same day. Then I use BlueHost.com
Your URL is yours forever as long as you pay annually. I always make my URL’s auto-pay, so not to lapse on my names.
Interesting Fact: A URL is just an abbreviation that stands for “Universal Resource Locator.” It’s another name for a web address, the text that you type into your internet browser when you want to go to a website. When you pick your name and buy a URL – YOU own a piece of the internet!
