Talking to moms about having their own business excites me. I know the reward of being able to be your own boss and be at home with your family. The problem I run into is:
They never get started!
I return to talk about how their business idea is going and I hear dozens of excuses. I listen, but in the back of mind I’m saying, “Fear”. We make dozens of reasons we don’t do something we want because of fear.
Fear is a paralyzer. It stops you in your tracks. You begin to create this huge imaginary wall that convinces you it is too much. I used to do this when losing weight. The excuses were overwhelming and that wall was just to high to climb. It took a health issue to get me to break down that weight wall.
So, let’s talk about the fear!
Make a list of your “excuses”. Here are some it might be.
- It will take too much time
- I don’t have the money to start it
- People won’t support me
- What will people say
- I’m not qualified to do it
- I don’t have the experience
- There’s too much to do
- I have no idea where to start
- What if I change my mind
- What if I fail
Are any of these on your list? What else would you put on the list? (put your comments below)
Well, let me tell you something I tell my children and other moms.
“The greatest act of courage is the first step”
Remember when your child took their first step? Did they fall? Did they try again? Of course. It’s the same as starting a business. You take the first step, fall, get up, walk again, fall, get up…..You know the drill. It’s just how it is running your own business.
I can’t tell you how many times I have fallen and had to get back up. Truthfully, I learned more about running a business during the falls.
There is a great reward in taking the first step. It’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment and a forward motion in your confidence.
Think about what you want to start. What would be the first step? Set a date when you will accomplish it. Look at some of the first steps I have seen in the moms who started home businesses:
- Getting a business license (which is very simple to do)
- Writing the outline of an ebook
- Buying the URL for their blog
- Ordering business cards
- Create a Facebook page
- Get one client for your exercise clinic
- Call a friend to ask for help
- Make your first YouTube video
- Make a Linkedin page of your skills/business
- Create a portfolio of your home designs
- Create an Ebay/Etsy account
There is something amazing that happens when you take the first step.
Ask yourself, after your child took their first step and fell – did he/she say, “this walking is too hard”, and decided to go back to crawling. Not a chance. Your child in the slight moment of their first walk realized there is freedom. You will too!
Let’s get that first step out of the way and on to the next, and the next. Before long you will have a business under way!
